A love hate relationship
ePortfolios and I have an interesting realtionship. As someone who is naturally reflective on my practice, and desires to support students to develop this skill, I love the opportunity they promise (see Bass, 2012). As someone who can imagine big things, I have found myself frustrated with the lack of flexibility of some ePortfolio tools.
My experience with ePortfolios began only one month ago. I had included an ePortfolio as an assessment item for SPH106: Communication Development and Community Practice. As an introductory clinical subject for the undergraduate speech pathology program, I was keen to teach reflection and have students practice there skills throughout the semester. I set up my own portfolio as a sample for students. Through this, my students and I are collaboratively learning about ePortfolios. However, I find myself sharing my frustrations with the students possibly more often than explicitly share the benefits.
Consequently, when I was required to set up an ePortfolio for my own study, I found myself wanting to explore other options. This is a product of my exploration as well as an expression of the process of my own reflection.
